It doesn’t. Well at least it shouldn’t. Most people incorrectly align party affiliation with their stance on social issues. You approve of gay marriage? Oh you must be a bleeding heart liberal. You oppose abortion? Step to the right you conservative bad ass.
But that’s not right. Is it required you assume the position of your party based solely on social issues? Now do social issues spotlight the most glaring differences people have? But are they all that matters when it comes to party affiliation. It shouldn’t be. Most people have no idea what the true impetus is behind party definition. Try this.
The Republican Party is associated with reduced taxation, limited government regulation of business, finance, industry, education, and policing. Republicanism believes decision making should be relegated to the state level. The federal government is viewed as an umbrella that supports and unites all fifty states.
Eureka! I’m a Republican.
Democrats support government intervention to regulate corporations, raise the minimum wage, protect labor unions, and lower costs for everyday expenses like healthcare and prescription drugs. They generally favor a progressive tax system where wealthier individuals and corporations pay a higher percentage in taxes to fund public services and social programs.
So Democrats really want to regulate everything including your living room. Well I’m not into that at all. Stay out of my business Democrats. Sounds like you’re a bunch of control freaks. They believe states maintain limited control and relogate most everything to the federal level. But how do they know me better than my local representative does?
What if I have no opinion about regulating abortion. Do I have to have one? I’m not a candidate for one. I’m not an expert on women’s health issues either. Do I have to be?
Now I am a gay man who is married to the same person for thirty seven years. Do you hate me? Do you wish to contest this? Are you an expert? You’re not? Great then stay out of it.
So is there any riveting revelation in any of this? Well here’s a few observations. Why would a candidate run on gender issues regarding sports and bathrooms? Does anyone really care about that? Is either of these issues impacting your freedom? If a transgender person wins an Olympic Gold Medal, just place an asterisk next to their name. When I have to pee bad enough I’ll pull the car off to the side of the road and get to it. Is my bladder too liberal? Granted, it’s a lot more loose than it used to be.
I want to meet the person that 100% embraces every stance their party has on everything. That’s impossible. I want to dismiss the person that operates on the belief that every single issue has a right side and a wrong side. Like we can’t agree on anything?
Now more than ever I think most of us are independents. I prefer to take responsibility for my own choices.
Don’t you?
Back to social issues. How did they get all tangled into this? I don’t think Thomas Jefferson had a stance on women’s issues. He was a well known rapist. An interracial rapist at that.
So drop all the social issue crap and let’s focus on the common denominators. We want to trust. We want to be protected. We should all agree on the separation of church and state. That’s how things got started here. Did we forget? The Founding Fathers separated church and state to protect religious freedom and prevent the government from establishing an official national religion. Plus religious freedom should protect my right to not be religious at all. If I’m going to hell that’s my business.
Someone tell that to Pete Hegseth. The Pentagon is launching a religious affairs office to address what he calls a loss of religious community within the military after an era of political correctness. WHAT?
I’m not 100% democrat and don’t identify with every facet of republicanism.
Wait … I think I’m CANADIAN!
