I guess the glass being half full is preferred but doesn’t it depend on the size of the glass? If we’re talking shot glasses, I’m pretty sure half full equals failure. Best to stick to tall glasses methinks. Now that I’m temporarily living alone, I am infinitely aware of full verses empty. I have no person to compliment or complete my glass so it has to stay full. Half full or empty isn’t a good thing. It’s either full or empty pour moi. I’ve even found myself tossing the leftover ounces in a glass down the drain just to avoid the half empty doldrums.
The past six months haven’t been easy ones for me, so it’s essential I stay positive and see the good in everything. This way I’m battle tough for just about anything this new life has to throw my way. And there’s been a whole of stuff thrown my way as of late. For instance, rerouting the pee n poop patterns of my dog from the country to the city. Knowing I have to keep a very consistent pattern that includes an an obstacle course of leashing up, quickly navigating the hallway to get to the bank of elevators, the elevator ride itself from highest floor to the main lobby … and then immersing myself and dog smack into possibly the busiest part of the city.
BOOM. Out of nowhere. My dog starts shaking during the elevator ride in anticipation of whatever will hit us first. I shake a little bit too. My glass quickly transitions from half full to 70% empty. How many homeless people will we have to ignore? Traffic noises, car horns and perforated mufflers. Litter that didn’t quite make it to the garbage can located just five feet away from the Popeye’s chicken bone left behind. Of course my dog wants a swipe at it. Quick yank and we’re back on track. Will the street crossings be our friend? Fast strolling’s the goal.
Somehow my dog has trained herself to pee on top of subway grates in the sidewalk. Passers by get a kick out of her “totally makes sense” approach. No splashing. No trickles. Just straight down the drain peeing. I’ve always wondered exactly what is directly under her favorite grate. And if there’s steam escaping, it doesn’t deter her from her duties. It’s a beautiful sight, her squatting in an open second position ding number one on something. Hopefully not strap hangers. I’ve never heard a reaction from down under so I don’t think people are getting an unwanted golden shower!
That’s how number one plays out on a good day, which is most days. The goal is to have a glass not empty but completely emptied. But our business day is not done. There’s also number two to deal with. In this case, I pray for the glass to be 100% full. We head to the park and a specific square of gravel. That’s number two preferred territory. She nails it there too. So grate, then gravel. The only coin toss of the routine is the trip from apartment to grate. Pretty tense right now. The dog is sensitive to city noise and activity. My job to throw blinders on her, which I do by repeatedly calling her name to keep her focus on me and not them.
Retraining a country dog to become a city dog ain’t easy, especially since you prefer half full glasses in some cases and completely empty in others. Yo prefer empty every step of the way.
But traveling the path to that grate, man oh man you need half full luck in that glass.
And then there’s the pulling crap to get back to the safety of home. Let’s back burner that one.
